Another Paperwork Burden for Photographers?

This new requirement, an apparent provision of the healthcare reform legislation, will require you to report both to the IRS and the entity or person to whom you paid any amount more than $600 in a year for goods or services.

I don’t know about you guys, but the record keeping can be a bit daunting for me sometimes.  There just never seems to be a perfect system to keep track of everything the government wants.  Well, it looks like, they are wanting just one more thing from us.  If I did not know better, I would think they were trying to put every small business in America out of business.

According to The American Society of Media Photographers, the IRS has asked for comments on this issue. ASMP has provided a letter for you to send asking them to change this.  Click here to find out more about what you can do to fight this.

We Found a Photographer Who Only Charges $50

And you get a CD with all of the images, too.

How many times have you heard or seen this?

More and more we are seeing this in the industry, and it is so disheartening. Everyone with a digital camera is now a photographer.  I can honestly say that most of the individuals will not be in business for very long. I went through some old expired profiles recently to check the status of their business, and most of them were no longer there. The domain names were up for sale. In all honesty, most of the time, I could look at their business name even before I clicked on it and could tell you if they were still in business.

The sad thing is that it hurts the businesses of those of us who actually take this seriously.

Many clients think we show up for an hour or two with a camera and that is all that goes into their images and cannot possibly see why that is worth so much money. They do not see the time and money spent behind the scenes.

The Value of a Portrait is an article written to show clients a more accurate estimate of the true costs in time and money that goes into their portraits when they hire a professional photographer. They will get what they pay for when it comes to photography. And they really do have to make a choice. Do I want a really good deal or do I want a keepsake?

Help me, help you!

I’ve spent a lot of time recently watching what people are doing when they visit the site so that I can give you the feed back you need to hear to increase your exposure. I am watching clients slip through your fingers. Let’s do something about that!

How you could be losing clients:

  • Update your listings to include the different types of photography that you do.  Many clients will search by these, and guess what…if your categories are not accurate, you do not come up in the search. Opportunity missed.
  • Update your images.  Your images are your first impression.  You could be losing clients because the images you are showing to clients are not your best work.  I have seen many people click on ads but not exit to your site.  There is a reason for this.
  • If you have a membership that offers 3 or 5 profiles, goodness gracious…use them.  You have already paid for them.  Use them.

Now for some news on our end….

  • Short descriptions now allow 245 characters and are a great little blurb for your business.  This goes hand in hand with putting your best images forward.  It’s what clients will see before they even decide to click on your profile to see more.
  • We have new colors for the site!  And along with that comes a new member banner!  Click here for the new banner code.

Best Mother and Child Portrait 2010 (May 2010 Photography Contest)

I love this contest!  There is just something so amazingly precious about that connection between a mother and child.  We run this contest every May in honor of mothers. We will be posting the finalists on facebook and tagging the photographers who took them.  Wouldn’t it be awesome if it encouraged others who saw them to take time to do a mother/child portrait session?

About The Charitable Marketing Calendar Project for Photographers

Our 2009 Review

When I reviewed this product last year, I hadn’t even thought of how perfect it would be for pet photographers. The Charitable Marketing Calendar is a GREAT project for pet photographers!  Imagine a charity calendar with all of your gorgeous pet portraits that raises money for your local animal shelter!  Who wouldn’t want a calendar with all of those adorable pet pictures? Love this idea!  Imagine the publicity, too! It’s a win win for everyone! ~411

The process of creating a calendar to benefit charity AND your business remains the same no matter the subject so it is EASY to adapt this charity project to feature PET PORTRAITS!
  • Your calendar can benefit an animal shelter or rescue organization.
  • Work with a local vet, groomer, or pet store to advertise for models or put on events to get the portraits you need for the calendar.
  • They can even suggest their favorite charity so you know they care about the project.
  • They can also be great resources to find out about other pet-oriented vendors that would be interested in getting involved in the project (or even sponsor the calendar).
  • If you are a boutique photographer, work with a boutique vet or pet spa or exclusive groomer!
